Arena Stage New Play Development Blog - Defining Diversity

Apr 27, 2010

In December, 2009 47 representatives from theaters across the United States participated in a convening on "Defining Diversity in New Play Development" hosted by Arena Stage. The purpose of the gathering was to discuss the following:

"When the term "diversity" is used in the current theatre ecology, what do we actually mean?"

"What are the existing practices for increasing diversity in new play development and are they effective?"

"Can we effectively measure the value of a diversified community around the theatre?"

The convening examined these questions and more by integrating theatrical practitioners from various cultural, regional, racial, aesthetic, and political backgrounds and perspectives."
